Footnote
Edward Barnsley, son of Sidney Barnsley, was part of the second generation of furniture makers and designers inspired by Art & Crafts ideals working in the Cotswold School style. By 1923 he had his own workshop in Hampshire and increasingly developed a more modernist style distinctive from his father’s.
Barnsley was dedicated to passing down the essential knowledge and techniques of making and invested copious time and energy into training apprentices, amongst whom was his son, the architect and designer Jon Barnsley. In 1980 a trust was established to preserve the educational training opportunities at the workshop and Jon Barnsley took over from his father, Edward, as the workshop’s principal designer. He retired in 2001, passing the mantle of principal designer to James Ryan who remains in the position to this day.
