Whilst the book for which this illustration was destined is unknown, the medium and the character of the work is typical of Jessie King's oeuvre. The delicately executed figures, made ethereal by their luminous halos, sit within a gently moonlit landscape, at once both realistic and other-worldly. The eponymous fountain adds an air of magic, the spurts of water creating the opportunity for King to incorporate dynamic, decorative lines of droplets in the same manner she uses stars or flowers elsewhere in her work.
