Edward Clifford was a British artist and a disciple of Edward Burne-Jones. The painting was created in Varallo, a district of Piedmont in northern Italy, between Milan and Turin. Clifford was deeply influenced by Burne-Jones, whose admiration for the Italian Renaissance painter Bernardino Luini shaped his artistic style. Luini’s influence is particularly visible in the striking, expressive eyes of Clifford’s figures, which became a distinctive feature of his work. Clifford belonged to a group of Burne-Jones followers whose art was described as “poetry without grammar.” His granddaughter remembered him as deeply religious, fascinated by duchesses, and exceptionally talented in watercolour.
