This illustration was originally produced as an etching for the frontispiece to Morris’ A Dream of John Ball (Reeves & Turner, 1888), with the original drawing held in the William Morris Gallery collection (D75). The motto was printed in lowercase Roman lettering by woodcut. It was reused in the Kelmscott Press edition (September 1892), framed in a Morris frame with the motto in capitals, both as woodcuts. It appeared again in a March 1894 leaflet for the Ancoats Brotherhood. The image was reconstituted as 'Labour' for the Daily Chronicle in 1895, about the time this untitled photo-relief was created. The Daily Chronicle illustration was one of 24 by prominent artists, assembled by Joseph Pennell to support the Reform Party in the 1895 LCC elections.
