Grace Barnsley was the daughter of Sidney and Lucy Barnsley. Her parents were friends with Alfred and Louise Powell, prolific decorators of ceramics both for themselves and for Wedgwood. The Barnsleys will have visited their studio often and Grace probably learned to decorate pottery as a child. She attended Birmingham School of Art and started decorating china from 1915. In 1917 she began ordering blanks from Wedgwood and later collaborated with F. L. Griggs, who owned the current lot, and her future husband Oscar Davies.
