Note: Stewart Carmichael was best known for his leading role in the Celtic Revival movement in Dundee, creating striking paintings of scenes from Celtic mythology and Scottish history. As a young man, he was inspired by the work of fellow Dundonian artists George Dutch Davidson and John Duncan, and his reputation was first established with his decorative murals for public buildings in the city.
