The Jacobites were undoubtedly masters at self and political promotion. The wealth of 'officially' issued propaganda that survives from portraits, letters, broad sides / proclamations and of course medallions proves this. Let alone the wealth of material created 'un officially' by supporters such as glasses and keepsakes.

This is perhaps best seen in the wealth of the medallic art they produced which charts the rise, fall and important events in the family, cause and within their supporters. Medallions throughout the Jacobites' exile were used as a very effective way to promote what was seen as important to them. 

Their connection to coinage in look, feel and appearance gave them an immediate feel of authority. This is perfectly illustrated in the portraits they portray which are always of official and important in stature (in some cases more so than the famous oil paintings), the events they illustrate tell the story of their victories and the iconography they use connects to the wider issues of propaganda and applied arts. 

The fact these are small and portable yet always had value, being produced by the finest makers of the day and in precious metals, gave them instant cache to those who had been gifted them directly by the Stuarts or who latterly collected them as supporters 'badges'. 

These medallions are only one side of the story and the Hanoverians were producing the other side telling of their victories and of course the right they had to the throne.
