Footnote
Note: Best known for his skill as a glass-maker, from 1889 Galle was also a successful furniture designer. He founded the School of Nancy, a group of designers who produced most of the best Art Nouveau glass and furniture in France from the 1880s until his death in 1904. This fine bureau plat with exuberant marquetry inlay demonstrates a playful juxtaposition between the traditional form of a mid-18th century bureau plat and the Art Nouveau, with its focus on nature and naturalistic forms.
