Footnote
Note: During the 1890s, de Feure moved away from painting and print-making, which had gained him critical acclaim to design decorative arts such as furniture and ceramics. Still working in the Art Nouveau style, de Feure's pieces were picked up by Parisian dealer Samuel Bing and he quickly became the dealers' top designer, producing decorated furniture for bourgeois society. His metalwork and silverware designs for Bing's Maison de l'Art Nouveau, such as the candlestick offered here, are in typically French Art Nouveau style; highly simplified lines creating a delicate floral form. His work was also exhibited at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris, where it was awarded a gold medal.
