Note: Austin Osmond Spare (1886-1956) an artist, draughtsman, publisher and one of the most interesting and obscure figures to have come out of the Edwardian art scene. Spare, one of the youngest artists to exhibit at the Royal Academy exhibition in London reached his 'golden age' early in life where he received much hype and media attention. Attributed at the time as 'Britain's first' surrealist and retrospectively as producing some of the first examples of pop art, he attracted the attention of many of London's avant-garde intellectuals.
As an artist he is remarkable for his array of work with etchings, pastels, drawings, publishing with text and image, painting and developing his own style of portraiture which he coined 'siderealism.' Producing a number of publishing's and drawings much of his work became clearly defined in the occult and magical realms and had become somewhat of an enfant terrible in the west-end. His work and legacy can still see its influence in the development of chaos magic and western esoteric thought, Spare today derives a vast interest in his work from both art lovers and the occult alike.
