Y2K! The Noughties Art Explosion 

Senior Specialist Simon Hucker reflects on the extraordinary energy of the Noughties art world, tracing how the momentum of the 1990s evolved into a decade of global expansion, new technologies and a rapidly changing market for contemporary art.

Our Spring 2026 Contemporary Art auction features a selection of significant works by key Scottish artists including a striking group of mixed media works by Dame Barbara Rae depicting some of her favourite landscapes in Scotland, Ireland and Spain; two early career works by Joyce Cairns, including one painted while she was still in art school and participating in a summer school at Hospitalfield and two important John Bellany works, one inspired by a period spent in Mexico in the mid-1990s and the other from his Obsession series of the 1970s. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;The auction also features two striking collections, a vibrant selection of artworks from An Edinburgh Private Collection of Contemporary Art led by a bold painting by Pat Douthwaite and featuring a selection of further paintings by artists including John Lowrie Morrison (Jolomo) and Gordon Mitchell and print works by artists as varied as David Shrigley and Peter Doig. We are also pleased to offer the first part of Y2K! Selected Works from an Important Private Collection of Contemporary Art, led by Piotr Uklanski’s sparkling photograph, Untitled (Starlit Water).We are delighted to continue to feature strong representation from other ever-popular Scottish artists including Elizabeth Blackadder, John Houston, James Morrison and Michael Scott and a further group of three playful Blakam’s Stone painted sculptures by Nicholas Party. &nbsp;&nbsp;
