Note:
Kees van Bohemen studied at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague from 1943 to 1948. His early work was abstract, particularly during his association with the Nederlandse Informele Groep and the Zéro group in the period 1959-60. Around 1963 he turned his attention to figurative themes. He travelled throughout his career; to the US in 1966-67 and Africa in the early 1970’s which inspired a series of paintings based on the local landscape and wildlife.
He is widely regarded as an Abstract Expressionist in technique, though for most of his career he still incorporated an element of figuration.
Van Bohemen has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Jacob Marisprijs in 1966.
