Biography:
Colin Middleton is a significant Irish artist. Born in Belfast in 1910, he trained at Belfast School of Art and found his greatest artistic inspiration in the work of Van Gogh. He had his first solo exhibition at the Grafton Gallery in 1944, and went on to exhibit internationally. Over the course of his career, Middleton worked in theatre design, taught at art school and produced posters, poems, murals and mosaics. Middleton considered himself the only Surrealist working in Ireland in the 1930s, a contemporary described him as having ‘an inexhaustible capacity for wonder.’
