Description
of square section raised on four bracket feet, the sides gently flaring towards the everted rim, each finely enamelled in mirror image with scenes of boys accompanied by their attendants holding auspicious symbols, referring to the 'wu zi deng ke' motif (the five sons passing the civil service examination), all between two bands of flowers borne on leafy scrolls, the stands decorated with fruiting branches of peaches, fingered citron and pomegranates, both the jardinières and the stands bearing an iron-red four-character mark to the underside, with pierced wood stands (2)

Sir Cowperthwaite was the Financial Secretary of Hong Kong from 1961 to 1971. His introduction of free market economic policies are widely credited with turning post-war Hong Kong into a thriving global financial centre. The 1976 Nobel Prize Laureate in economics, Milton Friedman, said of him "It would be hard to overestimate the debt Hong Kong owes to Cowperthwaite."
