Note: This work is illustrated in the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art's online Richard Wilson Catalogue Raisonne, having been recently reclassified by Wilson specialists post-cleaning. This 'Tomb of the Horatii and Curiatii' is related to the prime version (Richard Wilson Online P61), which is at Wilton House and was probably bought by Henry, 10th Earl of Pembroke (d. 1794) or his son. There is another version (P61A) at Gloucester City Museum and Art Gallery bequeathed by Stanley Marling in 1963. Differences between the two include the presence of only one figure by the tomb in the Pembroke version. This current work has two figures (as does the Gloucester Museum version) but is almost exactly the same size as the prime version. Unlike the latter it is monogrammed and is probably painted in the artist's post Italian years.
