Provenance: Previously in the collection of William Connal, Blythswood Square, Glasgow

Note: Old exhibition labels verso traditionally record this as a work by Hoppner. Interestingly, however, Miss Mary Palmer was Sir Joshua Reynolds niece and he painted a very similar portrait of her, now in the collection of Fairfax House, York. Hoppner is known to have painted versions of Reynolds portraits during the early stages of his career.
