Note: The Royal Bank of Scotland was founded as a corporation by grant of a royal charter under the Great Seal of Scotland in 1727, the year of the last execution for witchcraft in Scotland. It had a capital of £111,347 and authority to "exercise the rights and powers of banking". The Earl of Ilay, one of the most powerful men in Scotland, was its first governor.
