Note: A passionate philhellene, Hughes travelled in the Levant as tutor to Richard Townley Parker. Much of the present work is devoted to Epirus, where Hughes and Parker spent two months in the company of the architect Charles Cockerell, after whose drawings many of the plates are engraved.
