Footnote
Note: The family appears to be descended from William Roxburgh M.D. (1751-1815), known as the 'Father of Indian Botany'. While working as a surgeon for the East India Company, Roxburgh trained a team of Indian artists in botanical drawings and published the results in Plants of the Coast of Coromandel in folio volumes in 1795, 1802 and 1819. In 1793 he took charge of the Calcutta Botanical Garden. The William Roxburgh M.D. whose portrait appears among the images of this lot is presumed to be his grandson.
