Description
Shakespeare illustrated by an assemblage of portraits and views. London: G. Sidney, 1793. 2 volumes, 8vo, 158 engraved plates, contemporary dark blue morocco, sides with blind-stamped and gilt ruled border, each volume with a fore-edge painting, one depicting a man punting across a river with church and house beyond, the other with a man walking along a country lane with cottages beyond, both initialled J.E. and dated 1799, slight spotting

Hay, early inscriptions; Inserted note "The fore-edges of the pages of these 2 volumes were painted by John Edwards, bookbinder of Halifax, brother of James Edwards, booksellers of London, and were purchased by my brother James Smith at the dispersal of the Richard Heber Library in 1835 for £45. Alex Smith, The Close, Halstead, Essex, June 4th, 1848"
