Three sketchbooks of watercolours and pencil sketches showing views of Switzerland, including Zurich and Lucerne; Italy, including Florence, Genoa and the Sierra Nevada mountains; Britain, including Derbyshire and Scotland. Unsigned, circa 19th Century, each sketchbook approx 23cm wide by 9cm high, full blue calf/ morocco gilt, a.e.g., gilt stamp of initial F.M on upper boards, armorial stamp on lower boards of Britain and Swiss volumes (3)

Note: These three watercolour albums were painted between 1869-1873 and can be attributed to Fanny Maitland (d. 1896). She married Sir James Ramsey-Gibson-Maitland, 4th Bart., in May 1869. The honeymoon was spent on the Continent and, therefore, it is likely that the first sketchbook of Switzerland was completed during this period.
Provenance: These sketchbooks were sold as part of the contents of Sauchieburn House, Bannockburn, in May 1966. Sauchieburn House was one of the seats of the Maitland family.
