The Art Union
A Monthly Journal of Fine Arts

Auction: 8 February 2006 at 11:00 GMT
Description
London, 1846-1848, volumes VIII - X, 3 volumes, 4to, illustrated, including original talbotype of street scene by William Fox Talbot in volume VIII, label on verso absent, half red calf gilt, gilt edged, black labels, backstrips faded, rubbed; The Art Journal London, 1849-1852, volumes XI-XII & III-IV new series, 5 volumes, 4to, including illustrated catalogue of The 1851 Great Exhibition, illustrated, half red calf gilt, gilt edged, backstrips faded, rubbed (8)
Note: Volume VIII, January to December 1846, contains an original calotype or "sun picture" by William Fox Talbot of a street scene opposite page 143 and the article "The Talbotype or Sun Picture". Fox Talbot patented the calotype in 1840, the first instance of a photograph secured on paper and produced with paper negatives, which allowed for multiple copies of the same image to be made. His work "The Pencil of Nature," the first book to be illustrated with photographs, was published in 1845 and the appearance of a "Talbotype" in the Art-Union is likely a response to the positive reaction to the book.
This volume of the Art Union also includes several other articles on photography, including "Photographic Miniatures" on page 19, "Mr. Beard's Photography Portraits" on page 139 and "The Application of the Talbotype" and the "Daguerrotype."
