Gravesande, and Desaguliers, who at Newton's own suggestion had been invited to repeat some of Newton's original experiments, were amongst the most influential proponents of Newtonian physics during the first half of the eighteenth century. Desaguliers was skilled in practical mechanics being then the first English writer to give theoretical analyses of machines on the basis of statics and elementary dynamics.
