Description
The protestation of the Generall Assemblie of the Church of Scotland, and of, the noblemen, barons, gentlemen, borrowes, ministers and commons; subscribers of the Covenant, lately renewed, made in the high Kirk, and at the Mercate Crosse of Glasgow, the 28, and 29 of November 1638 ... 1st edition, state 3, [viii] unnumbered leaves, with a woodcut on the titlepage and a large woodcut historiated initial on the first page of text, modern half calf, marbled boards, the text probably washed and with various paper restorations to a professional standard, small 4to., Glasgow: George Anderson, 1638
Note: Aldis 923; STC 22047; Stewart in Records of the Glasgow Bibliographical Society I. p. 106; Glasgow Bibliographical Society A century of Books printed in Glasgow No 1
The first work to be printed at Glasgow, it marks "not only an outstanding event in the ecclesiastical history of Scotland, but - as the first known piece of printing executed in Glasgow - an important stage in the bibliographical history of that city." (Stewart) The Assembly abolished Episcopacy in Scotland and the subsequent disputes over church government helped lead to civil war.
The present copy would appear to be Stewart's State 3 i.e. with the catchword "of" on A2 verso and "intruded into doctrine" etc. at the foot of A1 recto. However, it also has the words "cease to repeat" rather than "heere repeat" in the middle of A3 verso. Aldis 923
