First edition, 4to (25.2 x 19cm), 20th-century red half leather, xviii [2] ix [1] 478 lix xvi pp., errata slip, folding table between appendix and index, a few words printed with Bengali types, browning throughout, spotting and damp-staining to outer leaves, title-page with two repairs on verso and an additional closed tear to head (through contemporary ownership inscription), hole in fore margin of appendix (tape-repaired in pp. xxiii-xxxviii)

Very rare Serampore printing: two copies traced in UK libraries, at the British Library and the University of Oxford. ‘Francis Macnaghten was knighted on becoming a judge of the supreme court of Madras in 1809, in which year he assumed the additional surname and arms of Workman. He was transferred to the supreme court of Calcutta in 1815, retiring eventually in 1825 … in 1836 he was created a baronet’ (ODNB, entry for his son, William Hay Macnaghten).
