In the latter end of the year 1817, and the beginning of 1818. London: John Murray, 1819. First edition, 4to (26.6 x 20.5cm), contemporary calf, rebacked, 11 plates (8 of which are coloured aquatints), 1 large folded engraved map with occasional hand-colouring, 6 maps and plans, boards very worn, inner hinge of upper board cracking, folded map with tears and tape repair, some dustsoiling, occasional spotting [Abbey Travel 519; Blackmer 588]

FitzClarence was the illegitimate son of the actress Mrs. Jordan and the Duke of Clarence (later to become King William IV). He served as an army officer in the Peninsular War and was later sent to India with his younger brother Henry, where he participated in the campaign against the Marathas in 1816-17. FitzClarence was subsequently entrusted with dispatches of the peace treaty signed with Maharaja Sindhia, and sent back to England via the overland route. The Journal of a route across India is an account of his travels, including his time in Egypt, where he met the Egyptologist Henry Salt and explorer Giovanni Battista Belzoni and explored the pyramids with them.
