First editions, first impressions, each volume respectively one of 3,000, 3,250 and 7,000 copies only, 8vo, original red cloth, folding map printed in red and black to rear of each volume (depicting Middle-earth in Fellowship and Two Towers, and Mordor in Return of the King), Fellowship additionally with full-page map of the Shire, bindings rubbed and marked, spines rolled, tips bumped and worn, Fellowship backstrip near-detached, Return of the King with two small sections of wear to rear joint, each volume with manuscript annotations in pen and ink to front endpapers mainly recording the dates of various readings, similar annotations to Fellowship title-page, rear free endpaper and Return of the King copyright page, Fellowship with adhesive staining to front pastedown, Two Towers with small stain to fore margins of pp. 10-35 and sliver of loss (not affecting text) to pp. 31-2, [Hammond A5a i-iii] (3)
