Description
Conteyning the Old Testament and the New. Newly translated out of the Originall Tongues and with the Former Translated diligently compared and revised by his Majesties Speciall Commandement. London: Robert Barker, 1613. Folio in sixes (37.8 x 24.8cm), modern leather, 508 ff., A-B4 C6 D4, A-4M6 4N4, text in black letter, in two columns, 72 lines, general and New Testament title-pages each with woodcut border, woodcut initials and headpieces throughout, bound with additional material comprising engraved title from a Book of Common Prayer at front, 17 leaves probably from an 18th-century BCP between preliminary quires B and C, the Genealogies (A-C6) and John Speed's engraved double-page map 'The whole land of Canaan' between D and A (end of Kalendar etc. and beginning of OT (Genealogies consolidated in fore margins, map closely trimmed and with repairs and losses), occasional 17th-century annotations. Leaves closely trimmed along top edge often shaving headlines, preliminary quires A-B with extensive losses and repairs (including to border of general title-page), occasional damp-staining and concomitant softening and repairs to fore margins (notably: OT A1-2 repairs to lower fore corners; M4-5 with tears to lower fore corners affecting side-notes; Q-S fore margins consolidated; 2H fore margins frayed; 3V1 with marginal tear affecting side-note; 3V5 with repaired closed tear to lower fore corner), 3R2 and 3R5 (Apocrypha) respectively with closed tear and large area of loss, 4E6 with small closed tear in text; 4H with damp-staining and softening to fore margins, and 4H2-3 repaired), 4I-M with repairs to fore margins, 4L1-2 with loss of text at foot of gutter, more extensive repairs in 4L4-6 affecting side-notes or text, 4N (final quire) shorter and possibly supplied, with extensive losses and repairs, losses to text replaced in manuscript, damp-staining to middle of volume (commencing at 2K, Psalms) [ESTC S122066; Herbert 322; STC 2226]
