One of 75 special ‘extra-illustrated’ sets of the quarter-cloth issue of 650 to include a portfolio containing a complete set of limited-edition proofs of portraits from the Subscribers’ (Cranwell) edition (distinct from the issue of 80 sets bound in goatskin), 2 text volumes, volume of illustrations, and portfolio, 4to, text volumes in quarter cloth, illustrations volume and portfolio in full cloth, text and illustrations volumes with dust jackets, text volume 1 with 2 colour maps loose in end-pocket as issued, portfolio containing letterpress title-leaf and 41 proof portraits (each 28.2 x 19.5cm, one of 250 copies, numbered in pencil on versos), with tissue-guards, all loose as issued, all volumes housed together in publisher's red cloth slipcase, spotting to spine of portfolio and to spine of dust jacket of illustrations volume, one tissue-guard in portfolio possibly absent

The printed limitation statement at the end of volume two of the text is annotated ‘One of 75 extra-illustrated sets’ and signed by Jeremy Wilson, owner of Castle Hill Press. Correspondence accompanying the lot includes the original Castle Hill Press invoice for ‘1 Extra-illustrated quarter-cloth set (1 of 75 thus)’ and a signed letter on the publisher's stationery confirming the limitation.
