First edition, 8vo (22 x 13.7cm), contemporary calf, smooth spine gilt in compartments, gilt tooling on boards including stamp of the University of Glasgow on upper board, marbled edges, 4 engraved plates, slightly rubbed, internally clean [Duveen, p.156]
Provenance
Inscription on front pastedown by William Meikleham, Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Glasgow, dated 1823, awarding the book as a prize to James McEwen.
Footnote
'One of the great classics of chemistry in which the atomic theory is first established' (Duveen). A second part was published in 1810, and the first part to a second volume 17 years later in 1827.
