First edition of Wecker, ‘Practica Medicinae’; one of two recorded 1587 printings of Everard, ‘De herba panacea,’ which was the first book devoted entirely to tobacco (USTC records an Antwerp 1583 printing). The author Giles Everard (Gilles Everaert or Aegidius Everardus) was a physician who is believed to have practised in Antwerp. The work discusses the beneficial medicinal properties of tobacco, and describes its origin, methods of curing and cultivation, and tobacco-based medicines for all kinds of illnesses. Other texts included are: Castore Durante ‘Compendiosa narratio de vsu & praxi radicis mechoacan,’ Gerard van Bergen ‘De pestis praeseruatione,’ Galen ‘De theriaca ad Pisonem’ and ‘De antidotis.’
