Footnote
In the early 20th century, Silas Hardoon was known as the richest man in Shanghai. He completed his gardens - known as Aili Garden - in 1909, on the plot where the Shanghai Exhibition Centre is now located. The garden was destroyed by fire in 1943, and photographs of the garden are almost unheard of.
