Footnote
Ponziani, an ordained priest and a professor of law at the university of Modena, was a leading member of the 18th-century Modenese school of chess, whose style of play was characterised by ‘rapid development of the pieces followed by a swift attack on the enemy king' (Enqvist, Chess Lessons from a Champion Coach, 2003). He gives his name to the Ponziani opening.
