Description
London: by J. C. for Thomas Dring, 1675. Second edition ('carefully corrected and amended, with many large and useful additions'), 3 parts in 1 volume, folio (29 x 18cm), [34] 324 [4], modern panelled calf to style, engraved additional title-page, retaining leaf of descriptive letterpress (‘The Explanation of the Frontispiece’), woodcuts in text, occasional marginal spotting, title-page with repaired closed tear and photographic facsimile of a document signed by Bulstrode Whitelocke (see below) tipped to verso, woodcut on p. 47 just shaved
Provenance
1) Possibly from the library of Bulstrode Whitelocke (1605-1675), leading parliamentarian lawyer during the English Civil War and keeper of the Great Seal under the Commonwealth and Protectorate, inscribed in an early hand ‘Bulstrode Whitelocke his booke’ on the verso of the title-page, in a style and hand distinct from Whitelocke's signature ‘B Whitelocke’ as it appears on official documents, though showing similarities in certain letterforms (notably the letter e); Whitelocke did name his fourth son Bulstrode, and if the elder Bulstrode were the owner of this book, it would have been in the final year of his life. (See R. H. Whitelocke, Memoirs, Biographical and Historical, of Bulstrode Whitelocke, 1860, p. 457).
2) George Paterson of Castle Huntly (bookplate reimposed to front pastedown).
3) William Allen Potter (bookplate).
