This June's Books &amp; Manuscripts auction is led by one of the most important collections of historical Scottish manuscripts ever offered for sale, containing no fewer than five letters signed by Mary Queen of Scots, with further letters and documents signed by James V, James VI and I, and Mary of Guise. &nbsp;The papers of Kilravock Castle, near Nairn in the highlands of Scotland, bring to life the history of the ancient Rose family as they fought for influence in a feudal society populated by child kings, doomed queens, jostling consorts and regents, and power-hungry bishops.From the 20th century, the highlight of the sale is a spectacular archive depicting the progress of Roald Dahl’s 1984 memoir Boy: Tales of Childhood from idea to print, and including 30 original ink sketches by Dahl. The Boy archive is one of several lots from the estate of the late Ian Craig (1944-2023), who was Dahl’s art director at Jonathan Cape while also working with celebrated figures including Judith Kerr and Ralph Steadman.The sale also offers a rich selection of children’s books and original artwork, rare works of travel and exploration, and fine bindings, together with original letters by figures including Winston Churchill and Ludwig Wittgenstein, and manuscripts and historical documents in fields ranging from science to the Napoleonic Wars.Buyer's Guide:

Letter signed "Marie R." with the joint name “Henry R.” (Henry Stewart, Earl of Darnley) to the Laird of Kilravock, giving him the charge of Inverness Castle: “Seing the defectioun of the Erll of Murray sa unnaturallie aganis ws, it is nocht convenient that any his houssis or ouris be retenit be him or ony in his name; And amangis the rest haue we thocht expedient to commit the keeping of our castell of Inuerness to yow, having sa gude pruif of your faithfull service”, dated 26th September 1565, 11 lines in a secretarial hand with the signatures below, 22 x 32.5cm, remnants red wax seal impression to reverse [Rose, Shaw & Innes pp.244-245]
