Footnote
Ivor Brown, recipient of this copy, wrote the introduction to the 1946 first collected edition of the Scots Quair trilogy, the work for which Mitchell is best known. Brown was also the dedicatee of Mitchell's Nine Against the Unknown, published in 1934, a year after Spartacus. Spartacus is considered the best novel Mitchell wrote under his real name, the Scots Quair having appeared under the pseudonym Lewis Grassic Gibbon by which he is usually remembered.
