Note : Signed by Tolkien on the titlepage for the owner who assisted with the filming of a BBC interview with Tolkien in 1969. Tolkien was mostly filmed in his rooms at Merton College, Oxford, where, armed with a well-filled pipe and tankard of beer (duly replenished for continuity purposes), Tolkien summoned up the imaginative world which he had created, which is now converted into the blockbusters that have taken the world by storm. According to the owner, the movies are but a pale shadow of what the BBC crew learned as Tolkien talked that day.
The final part of the interview was conducted at the edge of Christchuch Meadow as a helicopter carrying the cameraman lifted off to reveal Oxford's dreaming spires. The owner was lucky enough to be allowed to take a photograph of the great man minutes before. The owner recalls Tolkien seemed very reserved about photos and even more reserved about signing the present copy of the The Fellowship.A copy of the photograph is enclosed, along with the owner's recollection of the event.
