BLACKWOOD [William]
17 autograph manuscript letters

Auction: 8 July 2003 at 12:00 BST
Description
From the publisher and founder of the famous eponymous Magazine, William Blackwood (1776-1834] to his wife Janet (nee Steuart of Carfin) whom he addresses as Jesse. The letters are dated 1808-26, with some undated, from London, Portsmouth etc. Some are on foolscap and most carry post marks. There are a few tears, usually along the folds.
Note: Blackwood married Janet Steuart in 1805 at the age of 28 . Much of the material in the letters is personal, news about their children, his health, the departure of their son for India where he had gone to see him off at Portsmouth, etc. He also describes his activities in London, his negotiations with John Murray (whose Edinburgh agent he had become) in 1818, Murray's delight in receiving a new Byron manuscript (1816), etc.
