Description
the topography, edifices and ornaments of Pompeii: the results of the excavations since 1919...1st edition, 2 volumes in 1, engraved port. frontis. to vol. 1 and 87 engravings on 85 plates (including 2 hand coloured), 30 engraved vignettes, contemporary dark green morocco, spine decorated gilt in compartments, panelled with gilt fillets and ornaments, a.e.g., large paper copy, London: Jennings & Chaplin, 1832
Note: Encouraged by the success of his first account of the excavations at Pompeii issued in 1819, Gell produced this further work detailing further excavations which included that of the Chalcidicum, the Pantheon area, the Thermae and the final clearance of the Forum.
"Written when Greece and even Italy were comparatively little known to English travellers and classical students, his works were for some time regarded as standard treatises, and much of the information they contain is still of value to the topographer and archaeologist" (DNB).
De luxe edition on large paper with the vignettes on India paper and the engravings mostly in proof state. The list calls for a plate no 70 but which was never published.
