Footnote
The so-called Johanneum mark on this tureen was used for porcelains from the collection of Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony (1670-1733). Porcelains from the Old Collection, which began to be inventoried in 1721, bear engraved marks in black. These marks consist of numbers and letters identifying the particular class of porcelain. For example, pieces that were considered Japanese at the time were marked with a ‘+’. It is believed that the presence of the Johanneum mark indicates that the piece entered the collection prior to the death of King Augustus in 1733.
Compare to three highly similar Arita covered bowls, 1700–1730, all with Palace Number ‘N 313 +’, all in the Royal Dresden Porcelain Collection, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Dresden, museum inventory numbers: PO 5138; PO 5139; and PO 989.
According to the Palace Inventory 1779 Entry, in German: ‘Vier große Terrinen, mit Vögeln und bunten Blumen gemahlt, aufm Deckel ein vergoldter Hahn, 15 Zoll hoch, 14 Zoll in diam. die Größte; und 5 dergleichen Unterschaalen. No. 313.’ (Four large tureens, painted with birds and flowers in colours, a gilt cock on their covers, the largest 15 inches high, 14 inches in diam.; and 5 like stands. No. 313). The fourth might be the present lot.
