Footnote
This vase is painted with a rarely depicted story of 'The Contest of Treasures of Lintong', dating from the Spring and Autumn period (772 - 481 BC) and popularised by the Yuan dynasty play Lintong Dou Bao.
The story tells the tale of a competition organised by Prince Qin Mu of Qin country to conquer and intimidate his neighbours, whereby each feudal prince was to display the wealth of his country. At this competition, Wu Zixu, Prince of Chu country, displayed intelligence and strength, and earned the respect of all the other feudal princes by holding up for display 'a thousand jin heavy ding'. Thus, Wu Zixu was able to save his country from the threat of Prince Qin Mu.
See an exceptionally large famille verte charger, Qing dynasty, Kangxi period, also depicting the story but in a different design, sold at Sotheby's Paris, 16 June 2022, lot 18; a similar large charger depicting the same scene is in the Palace Museum, Beijing, accession no. xin 新99638. Also compare to a wucai baluster vase, Qing dynasty, Kangxi period, note the similar elegance in shape, form and palette, previously in the Rockefeller Collection, offered at Sotheby's New York, 14 March 2014, lot 29.
