Footnote
This highly unusual vase might be Shufu wares. During the Yuan dynasty, Shufu wares were used for ceremonial purposes at the Shumi Yuan, the government institution responsible for civil and military affairs. Although Shufu-type wares without these inscriptions were also produced for export, the finest examples bearing the characters were reserved for official use. The development of Shufu ware, particularly its distinctive thick white glaze, played an important role in the subsequent emergence of blue-and-white porcelain.
A closely comparable rare qingbai vase (yuhuchunping), Yuan dynasty, was in the Yang De Tang Collection and sold at Sotheby's New York, 17 March 2015, lot 102. Also see a white ware vase in yuhuchun form, decorated with slip-trailed and beaded decoration, Yuan dynasty, illustrated in Margaret Medley, Yüan Porcelain and Stoneware, London, Faber and Faber, 1977, pl. 6B, and in the Ashmolean Museum, accession no. EA1956.1399.
This lot has been imported from outside of the UK and placed under Temporary Admission. An amount in lieu of Import VAT will be charged at 5% on the hammer price.
