大正 藤川為信 《東海道名所膝栗毛画帖》 木刻版畫（一組二十五幅）
含：表紙（弥次郎兵衛、喜多八）及二十四幅東海明所圖（其中〈藤枝〉共兩幅）
comprising: a frontispiece depicting Kitahachi and Yajirobei, and a group of twenty-four scenes from the series ‘Tokaido Meisho Hiza Kurige’ (Famous Places of Tokaido), including ‘Shinagawa’, Two ‘Fujieda’, ‘Nanaya’, ‘Fukuroi’, ‘Shimada’, ‘Maisaka’, ‘Okitsu’, ‘Kakegawa’, ‘Otsu’, ‘Shirasuka’, ‘Ujibashi’, ‘Kusatsu’, ‘Goyu’, ‘Miya’, ‘Eijiri’, ‘Nissaka’, ‘Ainoyama’, ‘Ishibe’, ’Seki’, ‘Kyoto’, ‘Arai’, ‘Mishima’ and ‘Sakamoshita’ (25)

Provenance
Collection of the late Professor Malcolm Budd (1941-2026), thence by direct descent. Professor Budd was a distinguished philosopher of aesthetics.

Footnote
The series depicts scenes from the popular novel ‘Tokaido Meisho Hiza Kurige’ (The Tokaido Shank's Mare Album with Note, also known as ‘Shank Mare’) by Jippensha Ikku (1765-1831). The mis-adventures by the funny travellers, Mr. Yajirobe and Mr. Kitahachi from Yedo, who caused havoc at the inns and the visiting places along the Tokaido. The novel was very popular and the subsequent series of the misbehaving duo was written, they even went to Europe and USA.
Comparable frontispieces, one in the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art, accession no. S2003.8.2495, and the other was sold at Bonhams New York, 20 March 2019, lot 108.
