Footnote
The exquisite size of this cup is close to the small wine cup ('jiouyuan') mentioned in the Qing Court records, while its design derives from Ming dynasty Chenghua period blue and white or doucai decorated prototypes, see two cups included in the Special Exhibition of Ch'eng-hua Porcelain, National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1977, cat. no. 38, a doucai cup depicting the eight emblems surmounting a leafy scroll, museum accession no. Gu ci 故瓷018152N, and cat. no. 39, a blue and white cup which portrays the Buddhist emblems raised on canopies issuing from a leafy scroll, museum accession no. Gu ci 故瓷012569N.
For comparable underglaze blue and copper red ‘eight emblems’ cups, Yongzheng mark and of the period, one was offered at Bonhams Hong Kong, 30 November 2022, lot 126; the other offered at Sotheby's New York, 19 March 2013, lot 168; and a set of eight were offered at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 04 October 2011, lot 2052.
