Footnote
Gold and silver were less coveted in ancient China than in Rome or Parthia, but they gained importance by the Tang dynasty (AD 618–907) due to the Silk Road trade with western neighbours. Chinese goldsmiths imitated foreign shapes and styles of the imported goods, and developed new techniques under Central Asian craftsmen who settled in Chinese cities from the mid‑7th century. This cup, likely used for drinking alcohol, clearly shows how foreign vessel forms were imitated during the Tang dynasty. Compare to a gold cup with incised detail, also dated to the Yuan dynasty, is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, accession number M.30-1935. Another Yuan dynasty gilt-bronze handled cup was sold at Bonhams New York, 18 September 2023, lot 97.
