Footnote
Sir William Penn, the father of the founder of Pennsylvania, was knighted by Charles II in 1660 and made a commissioner of the Navy and in this capacity he worked closely with Pepys who refers to him in his diary as 'a rogue', 'a hypocritical rogue', 'a coward', 'a coxcomb', 'a very villain', ' as false a fellow as ever was born'. Pepys would seem to have kept his expressions of disgust for his diary, and was always ready to dine with Penn.
William Penn 2nd married about 1639 Margaret Jasper of Rotterdam and the founder of Pennsylvania was the elder of their two sons.
