Gabriel Argy-Rousseau studied at the National School for Ceramics in Sèvres and then made porcelain teeth. However, he became captivated by the potential of pâte de verre and in 1920 established his own company Les Pâtes de Verre d’Argy-Rousseau. His initial ideas were formulated in drawings that were then transposed into plaster models painted with lacquer varnish then covered with wax. He used sectional moulds and his own recipe for pâte de verre comprising feldspar, kaolin, and boric acid ground into a powder, with metallic oxides being added for colour. The powder was mixed with water and the paste brushed into the mould before firing.
