Biography:
John Houston, born in Fife in 1930, attended and subsequently taught at the Edinburgh College of Art between 1955-1989. His early works were vibrant and semi-abstract, but by the late 1960s, his paintings became more expressive, influenced by Turner and American Abstract Expressionism. Houston often painted landscapes and seascapes, many of which are now held in important Scottish collections.
Houston received an Honorary Doctorate from Heriot-Watt University in 2004 and held a major retrospective at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in 2005. He was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1972 and was married to the Scottish artist Elizabeth Blackadder from 1956 until his death in 2008.
