R & S Garrard & Co, London 1889, in the form of a James I silver spice-box, formed as a scallop shell with alternating plain and textured bands, the hinged cover opens to reveal an inkwell with a glass liner and a compartment, raised on four snail feet
Literature: The Collector's Dictionary of the Silver and Gold of Great Britain and North America, Michael Clayton, p. 368
Note:
This inkwell is based on a James I spice box, the original with a maker's mark, triangle intersected, London 1598, the gift of Lord Rothermere to the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple. This was part of an exceptional gift to the Temple in the 1930s. The Temple recently commissioned new cabinets befitting the collection and after some time were opened by Master Burnett on July 2021. In their website relating to the collection, the original spice box can be seen on the top shelf on the right.
