The Marital Arms of Marjoribanks and De Lautour
LautourThe arms as engraved upon the matrix of this early 19th to mid-19th Century Gold and Carnelian Gentleman’sPersonal Seal or Signet which dates to between 1808 and 1849 are those of the family of Marjoribanks impaling De Lautour. These armorial bearings denote the marshalling of a marital coat showing on the dexter (the heraldic right on the left as you view the piece) the arms of the husband and on the sinister (the heraldic left on the right as you view it) the arms of the wife. These armorial bearings may be blazoned as follows:

These arms undoubtedly commemorate the marriage of Edward Marjoribanks (born 31st May 1776 died 17th September 1868) and Georgiana De Lautour (born circa 1796 died April 1849). Edward and Georgiana were married at the Parish Church of St Marylebone, Marylebone in the County of Middlesex on the 1st October 1808. Edward was the fourth and youngest son of Edward Marjoribanks of Hallyards in the County of Midlothian and of Lees in the County of Berwickshire and his wife, Grizel Stewart, whilst Georgiana was the third daughter of Joseph Francis Louis De Lautour, of Hexton Park, Hexton in the County of Hertfordshire and his wife, Ann Hordle. Edward was a partner of Messrs. Coutts and Company, Bankers between 1796 and 1868. Their third son Dudley Coutts Marjoribanks (born 29th December 1820 died 1894) was created a Baronet within the Baronetage of the United Kingdom on the 25th April 1866 and further created Baron Tweedmouth, of Edington in the County of Berwickshire within the Peerage of the United Kingdom on the 12th October 1881.
